Richard Wagner - A Condensed Version Of Lohengrin - World's Greatest Opera Records 78 RPM Album Set

The complete album - Early access available via becoming a Patreon patron, details below.

After recording a set of 11 album sets of instrumental classical music for the Music Appreciation Products, Inc. for their initial "World's Greatest Music" series between 1938-1940, RCA Victor recording engineers also facilitated the initial "World's Famous Operas" series recorded in 1940 (12 album sets in total). The artists were not specifically credited on the original releases. However, recording session records have been found that identify who they were; see https://78records.files.wordpress.com... for more details.

I am also willing to sell my physical copies of the records I have digitized and uploaded onto YouTube. All records are priced at $1 each, plus the costs of shipping them media mail. The only exception is for the Seeburg 16 2/3 rpm releases, the market value for those is at least ten dollars apiece, and that is pretty much what I to pay to get ahold of any these days. Also, I was forced to drastically purge my collection multiple times between Fall 2014 and Summer 2017, so there is a good chance for videos released before or during that time period to no longer have possession of that record in my physical personal collection to sell.

The Charles Raymond Singers - Love Me With All Your Heart (Wyncote Records– SW-9018)

Wyncote was the budget record arm of Parkway records, a pop powerhouse with artists like Chubby Checker and such for a time in the late 1950s and early 1960s. However, after Chubby Checker's fame and his crowd of recording artists faded from the forefront of the popular music scene, Wyncote records gave Parkway new life. Wyncote ran for many years up through the late 1960s. Wyncote budget issues ranged from generic music, knock-off albums of trending popular music, and the old Parkway back catalog reissues.

Brahms Symphony No. 2 In D Major Opus 73 (World's Greatest Music Records)

From Discogs concerning the World's Greatest Music record label: "This U.S. label was produced by an unknown manufacturer for Music Appreciation Products, Inc. several label varieties were produced, starting in 1938..." Mainspring Press published an article in 2017 identifying the various orchestras and conductors used by RCA Victor recording staff for these releases. The conductor of the now unknown symphony orchestra was Eugene Ormandy.

My album set copy did not have the appreciation that normally accompanies the cardboard and paper album binders. This album is comprised of five 12" 78 rpm shellac records... I understand why classical music listeners were so happy when the microgroove LP was developed and why the first release Columbia issued in 1948 was classical. The 15-20 minutes a side capacity of LPs meant far less flipping or changing records, making for a more pleasant listening experience of longer works. The 1938 set required flipping over each record to play a given work in order, but the 1940 and 1941 sets appear to have the sides rearranged to be compatible with traditional record changers.

Johnny Desmond Swings (Tops/Mayfair Stereo Records L1635/9635S)

In the realm of budget record labels during the 1950s, Tops Records carved out a niche for itself, often tapping into the talents of established artists whose heydays had passed. One such collaboration was with the esteemed Johnny Desmond, resulting in the album "Johnny Desmond Swings" under the Tops/Mayfair Stereo Records L1635/9635S label.

"Johnny Desmond Swings" may not have stormed the charts or garnered widespread acclaim, but it has charm with its track selection. From the familiar tunes of "All Of You" to the nostalgic charm of "Tenderly," the album offers a pleasant listening experience, showcasing Desmond's enduring vocal prowess and the simple elegance of his interpretations.

While "Johnny Desmond Swings" may not been a gold record seller, it offers a glimpse into a bygone era of music-making. The album captures a moment in time when artists like Desmond, though past their prime, continued to share their talents with audiences eager for a touch of nostalgia. It's a reminder that even in the realm of budget recordings, hidden gems are waiting to be rediscovered.

Behind the scenes of "Johnny Desmond Swings" was the orchestration by John T. Williams*, whose arrangements, though not groundbreaking, complemented Desmond's vocals adequately. While the album may lack the grandeur of major label productions, it showcases the collaborative efforts of musicians striving to create something memorable within the constraints of a budget recording.

"Johnny Desmond Swings" may not have achieved commercial success, but it remains a cherished artifact for collectors and enthusiasts alike. In an era where the spotlight often shines on chart-toppers and trendsetters, albums like this serve as a reminder of the quieter, more intimate moments in music history. It's a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage recordings and the artists who lent their voices to them.

As we reflect on the understated charm of "Johnny Desmond Swings," we're reminded that not every album needs to be a chart-topper to hold significance. In its simplicity and sincerity, the album captures a fleeting moment in the career of a seasoned artist and the efforts of a budget label striving to keep the music alive. It's a humble yet heartwarming addition to the tapestry of musical history.

In conclusion, "Johnny Desmond Swings" may not be a towering achievement in the annals of music history. Still, it's a testament to the enduring appeal of vintage recordings and the artists who lent their talents to them. It's a hidden gem waiting to be unearthed by those who appreciate the simpler pleasures of music.

Rare Budget LPs - Songs That Sold A Million Records Volume 4 - Bell Records

The first Bell Record LP albums are pretty scarce- apparently, they kicked off the line with a ten-volume set of records comprised of complications of the cover singles of various top hits of the then-recent past. Only a handful of the budget-label era LP releases of Bell Records have been actually seen in the wild. I have had the privilege of seeing two, this one and a show-tune album containing songs from the popular musical "Flower Drum Song." I still regret not picking up the latter album when I had the chance. The moral of the story is that if you are on the fence about getting a record, just get it if you can... fewer regrets that way, I have found.

Royale Light Opera Singers and Orchestra- Songs From Porgy And Bess and others (Royale Records 1894)

Royale Records was a titan among the junk budget record labels of the 1950s. Led by Eli Oberstien, this label flooded the market with an extensive array of records in all standard speeds and sizes, catering to the musical appetites of the era—except for the elusive 16 2/3 rpm, but that was a format with limited consumer interest.

Among Royale Records' offerings is "Songs From Porgy And Bess and Others" (Royale Records 1894), a collection that captures the essence of the era with its eclectic mix of tracks. While some eBay sellers may tout these records as valuable commodities, the truth is they're worth no more than a couple of dollars at best.

Let the Royale Light Opera Singers and Orchestra guide you through the timeless tale of love, faith, and redemption, set against the backdrop of a vibrant and diverse community.

A3 Summertime
Allow yourself to be swept away by the languid beauty of "Summertime," a timeless classic that evokes the lazy days of summer and the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Let the serene vocals and lush orchestration of the Royale Light Opera Singers and Orchestra wash over you like a warm breeze, filling your heart with hope and longing.

B1 Intermezzo
Journey into the realms of romance and longing with "Intermezzo," a stirring instrumental piece that speaks volumes without uttering a word. Let the emotive melodies and soaring strings of the Royale Light Opera Orchestra transport you to a world of passion and yearning where love knows no bounds.

B2 Traumerei

Let the gentle piano melodies of the Royale Light Opera Orchestra carry you to a realm of serenity and contemplation, where every note is a whisper of the soul.

B3 Minuet in G
Step into the elegance and refinement of the Baroque era with "Minuet in G," a graceful and timeless composition that exudes charm and sophistication. Let the Royale Light Opera Orchestra guide you through the intricate dance steps of this classic piece, where every note is a testament to the enduring beauty of classical music.

The Continental Symphony Orchestra- Viennese Waltzes (Continental Records CLP-10; circa. 1950)

Continental Records was a budget label that was the forerunner to Remington records. Continental records started in 1942 by Donald H. Gabor, the same person that started Remington records in the early 1950s. Continental record LP's released in 1950 appear to have been essentially reissues of 78 rpm album sets produced by the label. These reissues were very cheaply produced, not even bothering to use LP-sized labels on the 10" album pressings, rather electing to use the same labels used on the earlier 78 rpm releases issued in the 1940s. This is a rather obscure budget label, LP-wise. Even online, I have only personally seen a handful of releases produced during the pre-and-early Remington records period before the Continental line was discontinued. I've never seen the same title twice, so I presume they are all pretty scarce.

I had another Contential release I picked up at the same time I picked up this release. Still, sadly it somehow cracked into multiple pieces before I could digitize it, even though it was properly handled and stored... perhaps this is why they are so rare, the cheap pressing material Donald H. Gabor's record label's used is more brittle than vinyl, so it is not uncommon to come across copies broken like a contemporary shellac 78 rpm release going through the stacks at thrift stores.

I think I may have a cassette tape recording somewhere of me trying to play the aforementioned broken record. However, my attempt to put the pieces back together with Elmer's glue (I was around 12 when this all happened) didn't result in a very high-quality recording.

The (Possibly) Ultimate Guest Star Records Budget Label Playlist

If you are into budget record labels, Guest Star should be a familiar sight. This label would issue early/obscure material of big-name artists the general public recognized- but only enough to fill half the album. The rest of their albums were then padded with related filler material in the generic music library Guest Star drew from. Below is a complication of almost 200 tracks released on the Guest Star label I could gather on YouTube.

Historical Edison Recordings Of Victor Herbert & His Orchestra (Early 1900's) (Mark 56 Records)

Taken straight off the original Edison cylinder records, this is an album of Victor Herbert, by Victor Herbert himself! This is not your typical budget record release of Victor Herbert tunes, and as far as I could find, some of these tracks have not been digitized; now they have been! Some of the original source material cylinders on this album have been directly transferred to digital audio, but not all. See http://cylinders.library.ucsb.edu/search.php?nq=1&query_type=keyword&query=Victor%20Herbert%20Orchestra for example. Paul Lavalle Plays Victor Herbert Melodies (Royale Records EP 252) 45 RPM Extended Play Record - Pressed In Red Vinyl

Royale Records was king of the junk budget record labels of the 1950s. Eli Oberstien flooded the market with a seemingly endless stream of records in virtually all standard speeds and sizes for records of the period, except for 16 2/3 rpm, sadly. I find most eBay sellers think these are worth money; they are not, at least not more than a couple of dollars.

There are digitized versions of the original 1947 Musicraft album release. Still, to be honest, even my transfer of an okay condition 45 rpm reissue sounds a little better than both for some reason. See https://archive.org/details/78_absinthe-frappe_paul-lavalle-and-his-orchestra-victor-herbert_gbia0020165 and https://www.amazon.com/Waltzes-Victor-Herbert-Lavalle-Orchestra/dp/B08F7XD6JT for reference. Top Hit Tunes/18 Top Hits was one of several budget record labels of the 1950s deeply associated with Enoch Light, which issued cover versions of than-hit songs on extended play 45's and 78's. These sorts of releases tended to come in sets of three, resulting in each package containing at least a total of 18 pop tunes. Additionally, these sets often came with a "bonus selections" record of a totally unrelated back catalog compilation of tracks unified by a central theme. The selections on this record are: A1 Lipstick, Candy And Rubber Soled Shoes- Loren Becker with Enoch Light Orchestra A2 Mr. Wonderful- Dottie Evans with Enoch Light & Orchestra A3 Forever Darling- the Zig Zags with Orchestra (174A) B1 Hot Diggity- Artie Malvin and The Zig Zags B2 Flowers Mean Forgiveness- Loren Becker B3 Blue Suede Shoes- Loren Becker with the Zig Zags (175A) If you want to support this channel's ability to produce new content directly, consider becoming a patron at https://www.patreon.com/budgetvinylworld today! 4 Star Sales (Gilmar Records 872-101) - 33 1/3 RPM Compact Long Play Record

This appears to have been a commissioned private promotional pressing, as it completely departs from Gilmar's standard output of cover versions of then-current charting hits. Tracks that are claimed by Content-ID have been removed for copyright reasons.

Jan Peerce Recital- On Varsity Records #69100- 10" 33 1/3 RPM LP Vinyl Record Album

Varsity Records was yet another label in the Oberstien fold of budget labels endlessly reissuing content mostly culled from previously released or even contemporary Royale Records albums.

Selections from this record are:

  • A1 Jan Peerce Amour, Toujours, L'amour
  • A2 Jan Peerce Mattinata
  • A3 Jan Peerce Macushla
  • A4 Jan Peerce Because
  • B1 Jan Peerce Vesti La Giubba–From "Pagliacci"
  • B2 Jan Peerce La Danza
  • B3 Jan Peerce La Donna È Mobile–From "Rigoletto"
  • B4 Jan Peerce Oh, Promise Me [Trimmed out off this video due to copyright issues. It is still included in the video mentioned below]

Just in case you feel like you have heard this set of recordings on this channel before, you are right! See (or rather hear): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHhkxbsxyaY. The sound quality of the Royale copy was better. Still, unfortunately, the first tracks on each side of the disc had many unavoidable jumps due to groove damage inflicted upon it by a previous owner or one of their associates or family.

The Savoyards- Mikado Excerpts (Royale Records)

Royale Records was king of the junk budget record labels of the 1950s. Eli Oberstien flooded the market with a seemingly endless stream of records in virtually all standard speeds and sizes for records of the period, except for 16 2/3 rpm, sadly. I find most eBay sellers think these are worth money; they are not, at least not more than a couple of dollars.

The tracklisting is as follows: A1 A Wandering Minstrel A2 Behold The Lord High Executioner A3 I Got A Little List B1 Three Little Maids From School B2 The Flowers The Bloom In The Spring B3 Tit Willow B4 Finale If you want to support this channel's ability to produce new content directly, consider becoming a patron at https://www.patreon.com/budgetvinylworld today! The Philadelphia Orchestra- J S Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 2 In F Major (World's Greatest Music) 1938 78 RPM Records

Discogs notes: "According to "The Philadelphia Orchestra: An Annotated Discography" by Richard A. Kaplan, this release was recorded by The Philadelphia Orchestra on November 12, 1938. Credits for Concerto No. 2 include Alexander Hinsberg, violin; Saul Caston, trumpet; William Kincaid, flute; Marcel Tabuteau, oboe; Eugene Ormandy, conductor; and Charles O'Connell, producer. The only credit listed for Concerto No. 3 was Charles O'Connell, producer. I have not included these credits in the Credits fields because the label "World's Greatest Music" produced anonymous releases." Debussy "Afternoon Of A Faun", "Clouds" And "Festivals" (World's Greatest Music SR-17-18-19) 1938

Afternoon Of A Faun.

                                                                                Festivals

This is my transfer of the World's Greatest Music Records 78 rpm Album Set: Debussy "Afternoon Of A Faun," "Clouds," and "Festivals," comprising of record releases SR-17-18-19; recorded and issued in 1938. I happened to get a complete set in great condition. This is likely my best transfer/restoration of a 78 rpm shellac record to date- the surface noise in this video is nearly inaudible with virtually no compromise to the reproduction of the original recording. I am proud of this one.
