Jan Peerce Recital- On Varsity Records #69100- 10" 33 1/3 RPM LP Vinyl Record Album

Varsity Records was yet another label in the Oberstien fold of budget labels endlessly reissuing content mostly culled from previously released or even contemporary Royale Records albums.

Selections from this record are:

  • A1 Jan Peerce Amour, Toujours, L'amour
  • A2 Jan Peerce Mattinata
  • A3 Jan Peerce Macushla
  • A4 Jan Peerce Because
  • B1 Jan Peerce Vesti La Giubba–From "Pagliacci"
  • B2 Jan Peerce La Danza
  • B3 Jan Peerce La Donna È Mobile–From "Rigoletto"
  • B4 Jan Peerce Oh, Promise Me [Trimmed out off this video due to copyright issues. It is still included in the video mentioned below]

Just in case you feel like you have heard this set of recordings on this channel before, you are right! See (or rather hear): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHhkxbsxyaY. The sound quality of the Royale copy was better. Still, unfortunately, the first tracks on each side of the disc had many unavoidable jumps due to groove damage inflicted upon it by a previous owner or one of their associates or family.

Remember, if this channel has at least five patrons on Patreon, I will stop having video ads placed at the beginning and end of each video I can monetize. Note some content is claimed by their rightful owners, who may have policies that automatically place ads on videos with their Content-ID matched content.

I am also willing to sell my physical copies of the records I have digitized and uploaded onto Youtube. All records are priced at $1 each, plus the costs of shipping them media mail. The only exception is for the Seeburg 16 2/3 rpm releases, the market value for those is at least ten dollars apiece, and that is pretty much what I to pay to get ahold of any these days. Also, I was forced to drastically purge my collection multiple times between Fall 2014 and Summer 2017, so there is a good chance for videos released before or during that time period to no longer have possession of that record in my physical personal collection to sell.

If you are listening to this, it is reasonably likely you, or a loved one may be interested in genealogy or family history; if this is so, please consider a visit to www.myfamilygen.com today!

From Discogs concerning the World's Greatest Music record label: "This U.S. label was produced by an unknown manufacturer for Music Appreciation Products, Inc. Several label varieties were produced, starting in 1938..."

Mainspring Press published an article in 2017 identifying the various orchestras and conductors used by RCA Victor recording staff for these releases. The Savoyards- Mikado Excerpts (Royale Records)

Royale Records was king of the junk budget record labels of the 1950s. Eli Oberstien flooded the market with a seemingly endless stream of records in virtually all standard speeds and sizes for records of the period, except for 16 2/3 rpm, sadly. I find most eBay sellers think these are worth money; they are not, at least not more than a couple of dollars.

The tracklisting is as follows: A1 A Wandering Minstrel A2 Behold The Lord High Executioner A3 I Got A Little List B1 Three Little Maids From School B2 The Flowers The Bloom In The Spring B3 Tit Willow B4 Finale If you want to support this channel's ability to produce new content directly, consider becoming a patron at https://www.patreon.com/budgetvinylworld today! The Philadelphia Orchestra- J S Bach Brandenburg Concerto No 2 In F Major (World's Greatest Music) 1938 78 RPM Records

Discogs notes: "According to "The Philadelphia Orchestra: An Annotated Discography" by Richard A. Kaplan, this release was recorded by The Philadelphia Orchestra on November 12, 1938. Credits for Concerto No. 2 include Alexander Hinsberg, violin; Saul Caston, trumpet; William Kincaid, flute; Marcel Tabuteau, oboe; Eugene Ormandy, conductor; and Charles O'Connell, producer. The only credit listed for Concerto No. 3 was Charles O'Connell, producer. I have not included these credits in the Credits fields because the label "World's Greatest Music" produced anonymous releases." Debussy "Afternoon Of A Faun", "Clouds" And "Festivals" (World's Greatest Music SR-17-18-19) 1938

Afternoon Of A Faun.

                                                                            Clouds
                                                                                Festivals

This is my transfer of the World's Greatest Music Records 78 rpm Album Set: Debussy "Afternoon Of A Faun," "Clouds," and "Festivals," comprising of record releases SR-17-18-19; recorded and issued in 1938. I happened to get a complete set in great condition. This is likely my best transfer/restoration of a 78 rpm shellac record to date- the surface noise in this video is nearly inaudible with virtually no compromise to the reproduction of the original recording. I am proud of this one.

The Thalia Chorus and Orchestra- The Merry Widow Operetta (Lehar) (Varsity Records 6981) LP Record

Varsity Records was yet another label in the Oberstien fold of budget labels endlessly reissuing content mostly culled from previously released Royale Records albums.

The early Varsity pressings are almost always noisy, and it makes one wonder if they really used vinyl, as they claimed on the jackets. Luckily Denoise noise filtering software allowed me to eliminate most of the excessive surface noise without ruining the recording's sound. This copy is thrashed, believe it or not, this is the best my audio restoration software could do without making the original audio sound like a '90s voice synthesizer generated it. There may be a cleaner-sounding version of it here: https://ligurianports.it/Lehar-The/Merry-Widow-Operetta/121955... However, I find the website a bit sketchy, given it is a Torrent-based file-sharing website that wants a credit card number before one can do anything. Maybe if I have a Visa gift card with a low amount of funds on it, I would give it a shot, but for now, I am going to pass; you can decide if it worth the risk. Brahms Symphony No. 1 In C Minor (Music Appreciation Records) 78 RPM Record Album Set- All 10 parts

This appears to be a somewhat later issue by Music Appreciation Records/Recordings, as Brahms' Symphony No. 1 in C Minor was not in the original 1938 line-up of the World's Greatest Music offerings. This may be the master recording of what Crown Records issued in 1957 on their second classical release- The two albums before mentioned sound pretty much identical. The former had slightly more richness in the lower frequencies than the latter.

National Opera Orchestra- Leonore Overtures Nos 1 & 2 Beethoven Characteristic Overtures In C (Varsity Records)

Varsity Records was yet another label in the Oberstien fold of budget labels endlessly reissuing content mostly culled from previously released Royale Records albums. Concerning this set of tracks Sound Fountain in their publications concerning the true identities of the musicians whose works appeared on Oberstien's classical records said this, "The performers of the rarely heard Leonore No. 1 and the Leonore No. 2 on this disc are still unidentified." Members Of The New York Philharmonic: Wagner Die Meistersinger Overture and Parsifal Prelude (World's Greatest Music Records SR-11/12)

From Discogs concerning the World's Greatest Music record label: "This U.S. label was produced by an unknown manufacturer for Music Appreciation Products, Inc. Several label varieties were produced, starting in 1938..."

Also see https://www.stokowski.org/Fritz_Reiner_Discography.htm. The conductor for this recording is Fritz Reiner- in case you were wondering.
Note that the "of Nurenberg" is omitted from this piece's listed title; this was likely because the Nazi party was highly associated with the German city of Nurenberg. With rising tensions and increasing unease with Nazi Germany, this record label decided to omit Nurenberg's reference in the heated political climate on the eve of the formal start of World War Two, which occurred roughly a year after these recordings sessions, in 1939. Sometimes history is told in what is not stated in published media as much as what is said. It is surprising to me that Wagner was selected at all to be published, but then again, to skip Wagner, one would need to skip all the other Germanic composers as well, which would have left the label very few famous classical composers the general public both recognized and were familiar with their works to choose from. Below are scans of the literature that accompanied the original album set, including another of Wagner's works, "Parsifal Prelude." I unfortunately only have one of the two records (I have SR-12, but not SR-13) that the latter work required in the days when 12" 78 rpm records were the best/only way to release pre-recorded classical music to the general record-buying public.
